Mudroom makeover
Mudroom, but make it fashion.
Do you have wild design dreams but are too nervous to apply that “high risk, high reward” design to a main living space? (lol this is sounding like the opening of a bad commercial). Take that bold design and put it in a space that doesn’t really matter. Go bold with the mudroom, powder room, or even your pantry! That is exactly what we did at the Link House.
Let’s break down this beautiful mudroom.
First, this space was BEGGING for a corner bench with storage. I was very excited about it until I learned how annoying it was to build two square boxes that need to fit into a corner that is not even close to a 90 degree angle.
Isn’t home improvement fun?!
Benches built, check!
Time to plan out the wainscoting.
When I came across Nadine Stay’s tutorial for a modern take on wainscoting (link below!), the design for this mudroom became clear. Hundreds of rip cuts later, I’m questioning my sanity.
Next up: paint the walls, add peel & stick wallpaper, nail a chair rail to the wall, nail exactly one billion slats to the wall, fill nail holes, paint again, call the electrician and ask how to move an electrical outlet, move the electrical outlet to the outside of the bench, install hinges for bench lids by yourself and say a lot of curse words, DONE!
In our final photo below, you see I added some clear hanging window shelves (thanks Amazon) for plants, added wood hooks that I painted green, and a Ruggable runner that actually does get clean after you wash it! Somehow this space now gives me homey-vintage-cottage vibes with the painted trim and dark green color, but also remains modern due to the custom cut wainscoting and the hippy, psychedelic wallpaper. Everyday the clients get to walk into their home and experience a space with so much style and VIBE. We shouldn’t ignore these rooms that don’t really matter. Make a moment out of them. Best part is we could easily peel off the wallpaper, spray this whole room a bright white, and we have added thousands of dollars to the value of the home for resale.
